Review: I Love Techno '14

Saturday 8th of November, we arrived at the city of Ghent in order to go, for second time, to the I Love Techno festival, which is one of the most famous techno festivals in Europe. The city was plenty of electronic music lovers and plenty of energy. The localization of the festival was the same as the year before and the logo of the festival could be seen from far away, so we arrived there easily.

We were expectants for listening to a lot of performances, but first, we lost a lot of time in the entrance because of the police control which, in our opinion, was exaggerated and because this edition has assembled between 5000-10000 more than last year. So we couldn’t see the first performance we wish, Clean Bandit. We finally entered and we went directly to the blue room (the structure of the festival was explained some days ago) because Underworld would start the show in 10 minutes. The British group performed a live plenty of energy and colours (we think that they don’t let down any follower in their concerts), being their closing one of the best moments of the festival with the Born Slippy track with which the room got crazy. After that we tried to enter to red room for enjoying the Djset of Vitalic but the entrance was crowded and we preferred to move to the yellow room for listening to some electro sounds with Daniel Avery b2b Erol Alkan. In the same room we had the most expected performance of the night, Brodinski and Gesaffelstein, but we could only listen to them 15 min of that enormous b2b because the room was so full.

Our desire was to enjoy the live set of Paul Kalkbrenner and we moved to the blue room where Jamie Jones was delighting the public with his characterized deep-tech-house with which he has obtained a great reputation in Ibiza this year. The lights were closed and the room in silence, and then, the room filled up with a lot of colours while Aaron track was starting to sound. Paul Kalkbrenner had started the show and we activated all the senses. There is no description of the feelings in that 1.15h because every track of him contains a small piece in the history of our friendship, one advice, you should live one performance of the German Dj, at least, one time in your life. After that awesome performance, Loco Dice started his set with an incredible opening, but we preferred to rest some minutes before returning to the yellow room. The closing set of our festival was directed by two genius, Audion and Tiga performed, not the most sensed live that but the most technical and energetic set we heard that night. There were 2 more hours of festival, but our batteries were dead and we had a long journey to go home.

We don’t know if we will come back, but it is a festival that we fully recommend. Thanks to all the people we met and thanks to all artists that offered us magical moments.

Second day of Sónar 2014. Taking into account that it was friday and there would be the Sonar by Night, we decided to go to the festival a little bit later than the day before. When we entered to the festival we could listen the pop rhythms of FM Belfast at SonarVillage, but we moved so quickly to the SonarDôme to enjoy the live of Dengue Dengue Dengue. The peruvian duo spiced up the room with a variety of tracks of electrocumbia and mashups of dubstep. In that occasion we could enjoy a live so well developed, starting with some calm rhythms and finishing with more danceable and crazy sounds. For us, it was an awesome and surprising live! (You can enjoy this full set here!). After that, we moved another time to the SonarVillage to see the live of Bonobo, one of the most important performances of the afternoon. Simon Green managed the show from the plates, accompanied by vocals, wind instruments, percussion and a lot of artists that were appearing on the stage to offer a great remember of friday afternoon. That afternoon we would like to see the live of Jon Hopkins, but if you wanted to recover some energies before Sonar by Night you should go out before closing performances.

It was night and we went where the Sonar by Night took place. We arrived just in time to see one of our most wanted performances of the festival: Moderat. The trio formed by Modeselektor & Apparat offered an unforgettable live where we could listen to the most well-known tracks like Bad Kingdom, Nr. 22 or Rusty Nails. Without a doubt, it was one of the best memories of the festival. Then we moved to the SonarClub, there we could listen to Flux Pavilion mixing hard dubstep sounds while we were waiting the live Pretty Lights. The lights show didn’t disappoint us, plenty of bass drums, funk sounds and more dubstep than we expected.

After that, we went to the SonarLab to enjoy the live of Gesaffelstein who probably is the most elegant Dj of the world wearing great suits of the most important brand names and he has developed his own style of electronic music. The great session of acid-techno, so hard and powerful sounds offered by the suit magician let us to dance all the live. In the middle of the live we escaped some minutes to see the live of Caribou. There was a significant attendance of public. The most fascinating thing was the number of artists on the stage that were developing happy and danceable rhythms with the warm sounds of the live instruments, so, a beautiful combination for taking some energies for the next performances.

We moved another time to the SonarPub, where Todd Terje lighted up the place with his mixes of great funk sounds, that kind of sounds forced all to move the bodies forcing them to transport to a 80’s or 90’s dance floor. While the live was running we could observe the quality of this artist who didn’t distance from his piano which was the clue of that awesome live.

And then, on the same stage, the Dewaele (2ManyDjs) brothers appeared to start the DjSet. We had seen that artists a lot of times, we had enjoyed their remixes and bootlegs a lot of times, and they did it another time. We thought that the set would be poor due to the 6 hours of Despacio every day, but, surprisingly, they rewarded us with a fantastic and unforgettable session with a lot of tracks that we had rarely listened in their mixes and also, with the most common tracks of their sessions like Hey Boy Hey Girl, La Rock 01, Kids, XTC. Finally, and for closing the SonarPub, The Martinez Brothers. This pair of young americans, arrived from NYC, mixed pure house-techno sounds with which we could dance till 6.30am, the time when our energies ran out.

****************************************************************************************************************

Line Up Preview Analysis: Sónar 2014

Desire, this is the word that defines the sign of Sónar 2014. Desire to reach one of the best festivals in the catalan city, desire of seeing the performance of some international artists that maybe, we won’t be able to see another time, and finally, after a lot of years, we will go with the Sonar Weekend Pass (be quiet because you will have a large review of the festival).

A lot of people were open-mouthed with the first preview. Massive Attack as a headliner (saturday 14) and its new show, will be the attraction of a lot of the assistants, Richie Hawtin, who will come back to Barcelona, after his performance in Ker Club the last new year eve, to present his new show, Close (friday 13), and in addition, he will also return as Plastikman (it is a suggestion for all the people who will go to the Sónar by day). There are a lot of artists although we want to stand out, the Moderat trio, made up by Modeselektor & Apparat, doing the Moderat Tour 2014 that is triumphing in all the cities where they go (emphasising the majesty of their last work II), y el señor del traje, Gesaffelstein (live), one of the most important representative of international electro style, who will come to present his last album Aleph, that could be defined as stylish. For closing this first preview, we want to add the name of Pau Roca, a young producer of Barcelona, who has technique for mixing as the same level as some important international artists, and finally, we could mention the union of two giants of dub and hip hop, Noisia & Foreign Beggars, with the name of I Am Legion, you should go to their performance with the energies fully charged because it could be crazy.

In the middle of january the second preview arrived, and we thought that our heart started to beat quicklier! Pretty Lights, Rudimental, Flux Pavilion, Tiga o The Martínez Brothers, make this festival as an indispensable meeting (we think that there will be more surprises). If somebody paid attention to the social networks, the preview was two days ago before the desire of the organization… Moderat move forward the new names of the sign by an official photo that was immediately removed. So, the dubstep and drum’n’bass will be represented by Pretty Lights, Flux Pavilion and Rudimental, they will be headliners of the Sonar Club (we could notice that Pretty Lights will act on friday 13 because on saturday they will be the headliners of the Spring Awakening of Chicago). Pretty Lights will leave someone open-mouthed with the presentation of A Colour Map of the Sun and the perform its lights show, meanwhile Flux Pavilion will introduce the album Blow of the Roof, and Rudimental, we don’t know how describe this headliner, energy and fun in a pure state with 12 artists on the stage. On the other hand, Tiga and The Martinez Brothers, with their characteristic technique, will provide sessions of electro, tech-house, or techno.

For closing the analysis, there are artists like Four Tet, Jon Hopkins, James Holden or Ben Frost of who we will introduce in nexts posts.

For the new people, welcome to the world of Sónar, and for the people that know about it, be patient, the weekend seems to be so far away in the calendar but we think that these four months will pass so quickly!

****************************************************************************************************************
